The costly pitfalls

Never pay a middleman for a nulla osta or contract: selling a nulla osta is a crime, and Naples/Caserta are fraud hotspots (139 scams recorded in H2 2024, fake employers who vanish after you arrive).
Do not miss the pre-filling window on the ALI portal (23 Oct - 7 Dec 2025): without a form pre-filled in advance you cannot submit on click day, and quotas run out in seconds.
Don't confuse the 2026 click day dates: 9 Feb (seasonal/agricultural), 16 Feb (non-seasonal work), 18 Feb (domestic/care work) - filing in the wrong category means rejection.

The 2026-2028 triennial plan sets 497,550 entries (164,850 in 2026): have the employer pre-fill from the 23 October opening, as the non-seasonal quota vanishes in seconds on 16 February 2026.
Cameroon is not on the priority list of readmission-agreement countries (art. 6) that reserves ~47,000 agricultural slots: you compete in the general quota, so speed and a flawless file are decisive.
After acceptance, the employer must CONFIRM the request at the Sportello Unico within 7 days of the communication, otherwise the nulla osta is revoked: stay in constant contact at this stage.

Study in Italy: Universitaly pre-enrolment, annual quota for foreign students, and programmes taught in Italian or English.

The funds threshold rose to EUR 10,179.85/year for 2026/27 (versus ~EUR 6,950 before): do not build your file on the old amount, and avoid big last-minute transfers — the embassy traces where the money comes from.
A 'pending' DSU scholarship application does NOT count as proof of means for the visa: only a formally awarded scholarship enters the calculation (2026/27 circular).
Without a pre-enrolment VALIDATED by the university on Universitaly, visa refusal is automatic: watch the validation status in your account, not just that the file was sent.

Insider tips

The regional DSU scholarship is the best Cameroonian card: with a low ISEE parificato (nearly automatic for an average Cameroonian family), expect at least EUR 7,072/year + housing + meals + zero tuition, from year one and with NO merit requirement — prepare legalised family income documents while still in Cameroon.
Prefer the online CIMEA attestation (comparability + authenticity verification, required by the 2026/27 circular) over the Dichiarazione di valore alone: it is requested on cimea.it with no embassy queue — start it months ahead.
The realistic combo: an English-taught programme (IELTS/TOEFL B2) + A2/B1 Italian learned on site — Italian remains essential for student jobs, internships and daily life.

Join a family member holding an Italian residence permit: the sponsor's income and housing drive the decision.

The costly pitfalls

Fragile civil status records (supplementary judgments, late registrations, name discrepancies): the embassy in Yaounde verifies authenticity and can freeze the file for months, or even raise DNA testing when parentage is in doubt — get the records corrected BEFORE starting the procedure.
Sponsor's income below the threshold (EUR 10,651.68/year to bring over 1 family member in 2026): only declared income counts — undeclared work and inflated payslips lead straight to a nulla osta refusal.
Without the Comune's idoneita alloggiativa certificate (housing size and standards), no nulla osta: some municipalities take 1 to 3 months to issue it — it is often THE bottleneck of the timeline.

Insider tips

No quota and no click day for family reunification: applications are filed year-round — speed depends solely on how complete the file is (income, housing, records).
BLS Yaounde requires a passport valid at least 15 months when filing the family visa: check and renew passports for the WHOLE family even before the nulla osta.
Keep every money-transfer receipt (Western Union, MoneyGram, Ria): for a dependent parent, BLS asks for the sponsor's last 6 transfers as proof of dependency — a regular history beats one big one-off transfer.

Visit Italy for up to 90 days (tourism, family visit) on a short-stay Schengen visa.

Italy is one of the toughest Schengen countries for Cameroonians: a 54.63% refusal rate in 2024 (Schengen average for Cameroon: ~38%) — an 'average' file is a refused file, and the EUR 90 fee is not refunded.
Never pay a fixer who 'guarantees' the visa or the BLS appointment for XAF 200,000-500,000: nobody can guarantee a Schengen visa, and BLS slots are booked online for free.
Fake bank statements or employment letters: the embassy verifies authenticity, refuses and flags the fraud — it then follows you across the whole Schengen area through the shared databases.

Insider tips

A credible return outweighs the bank balance: an employment contract with signed leave authorisation, a business or activity in Cameroon, family staying home, land titles — document every tie.
Invited by a relative in Italy? Attach their dichiarazione di ospitalita with a copy of their permesso di soggiorno or ID card and, if they sponsor you, their proof of resources: it is more credible than a never-paid hotel.
File early (up to 6 months before the trip): in high season (June-August, December), BLS slots in Yaounde and Douala go weeks in advance.

Set up as self-employed in Italy through the Decreto Flussi “lavoro autonomo” quota — a very narrow contingent: real but rare.

The costly pitfalls

650 places per year for the entire world (Decreto Flussi 2026-2028), all categories combined: anyone who 'guarantees' you a lavoro autonomo visa is lying — it is the narrowest route in the Italian system.
No attestation can be bought: the Questura nulla osta, the chamber of commerce attestation and the professional bodies' declarations are issued by the authorities — a 'self-employment nulla osta' sold in Douala or Yaounde is a forgery that will get you visa-banned.
Do not present documents older than 3 months to the consulate: expired Italian attestations mean a rejected file; time their issuance to your BLS appointment.

Insider tips

2026 window: quota applications open on 16 February 2026 at 9:00 AM and stay possible until 31 December within the 650 places — a file that is complete by January maximises your chances.
The realistic profiles: freelance professionals and consultants with solid degrees and references, artists with documented renown (press, contracts, awards), officers appointed in an Italian company — a 'plain' entrepreneur must invest at least EUR 500,000 and create 3 jobs.
An often more practical alternative: enter as an employee through the subordinate-work Decreto Flussi, then switch to self-employment from within Italy at a permit change or renewal, without going back through the 650 quota.
