  • Do not use private "agencies" in Douala/Yaoundé promising a guaranteed visa for 500,000+ FCFA: Campus France (Études en France) is the ONLY official channel and no intermediary can guarantee a visa.
  • Submitting an incoherent study plan (breaks from your track, unexplained gap years) is the number-one reason for rejection at the Campus France interview.
  • Missing the Études en France calendar: the campaign opens around October/November and closes around March; a missed deadline costs a full year.

  • Prepare seriously for the Campus France interview (Yaoundé/Douala): a clear plan, ties to Cameroon, and financial consistency matter more than grades alone.
  • Budget for two separate fees: the Campus France Cameroon processing fee (~92,000 FCFA, non-refundable) AND the long-stay visa fee (€50).
  • Apply to several programs (up to 7 choices) that are coherent with your track to maximize an acceptance, without scattering your project.

Talent Passport

Work in France as a qualified employee, researcher or founder, with a multi-year residence permit.

The costly pitfalls
  • Confusing the "Talent - qualified employee" card (former Passeport Talent) with an ordinary work visa: it requires a Master's (bac+5) AND pay ≥ 2× minimum wage (~€43,000 gross/year in 2025).
  • Believing you can build the file alone: without a firm employment contract signed by an established French employer, there is no admissible application.
  • Neglecting recognition of the Cameroonian diploma: an ENIC-NARIC comparability statement (and sworn translation) is often required; an unrecognized degree means rejection.
Insider tips
  • The "Talent" card is issued for 4 years from the start and opens the "Talent (Family)" permit: the spouse and children get a permit and may work freely.
  • For "Talent - business creation", plan for a Master's (or 5 years' experience), an investment of ≥ €30,000, and a real, viable economic project.
  • The EU Blue Card (Talent track) requires pay ≥ 1.5× the average salary (~€53,800/year in 2025) but then eases mobility within the EU.

Family reunification

Join a family member legally residing in France (spouse, parent) through family reunification.

The costly pitfalls
  • Bringing the family before OFII approval ("on-site" reunification): this is almost always refused; the family must stay in Cameroon until authorization.
  • Suspect Cameroonian civil-status records: supplementary birth judgments and marriage certificates are checked (record verification, sometimes DNA testing); any fraud means permanent refusal.
  • Insufficient resources: you need stable income ≥ minimum wage (excluding welfare/RSA) over 12 months, with a higher threshold for larger families (1.1× from 4-5 people).
Insider tips
  • The sponsor in France must show at least 18 months of legal residence with a valid permit before being able to file the request.
  • File the request online on the OFII website (paperless procedure); the prefecture has 6 months to decide and silence counts as refusal.
  • Distinguish family reunification (OFII) from the "spouse of a French citizen" visa (VLS-TS private/family life), which is simpler and has no income or housing condition.

Short stay (Schengen visa)

  • Memorize the French means scale: EUR 32.50/day with a town-hall-validated host attestation, EUR 65/day with a hotel booking, EUR 120/day without proof of accommodation — and calibrate your statements and trip length accordingly.
  • The host attestation is requested by your host at THEIR town hall in France (EUR 30 tax stamp) and the ORIGINAL must reach you in Cameroon: allow 3-4 weeks plus express shipping.
  • File early: applications open 6 months before the trip and close 15 working days before; in summer, TLScontact slots in Yaounde and Douala dry up weeks ahead.

Start a business (“talent” permit)

Settle in France to start a business on the “talent” permit (4 years, renewable): a master's degree or 5 years' experience, a real project and €30,000 invested.

  • Choosing the wrong category: the talent 'business creation' card requires a master's OR 5 years' experience AND EUR 30,000 invested; without these, aim for the 'entrepreneur/liberal profession' VLS-TS (1 year) rather than a talent file doomed to rejection.
  • Filing the visa application without the attestation of the project's real and serious nature (ministry of the economy opinion, examined by the DRIEETS): it is the cornerstone of the talent business-creation file, to be requested online months in advance.
  • Presenting an unrealistic forecast (underestimated costs, inflated revenue, unproven funds): the administration assesses the project's economic viability and negative opinions are common.

  • The real-and-serious-project attestation is requested for free ONLINE from Cameroon (demarche.numerique.gouv.fr): start with this step, it drives the whole timeline.
  • The EUR 30,000 (~19.7 million FCFA) can be your own funds OR borrowed (loan, partners), but the origin must be traceable in your statements: document every significant movement.
  • The talent card is valid up to 4 years and opens the 'talent (family)' card: your spouse and children get a permit with the right to work WITHOUT family reunification — file their visa applications in parallel.
