The costly pitfalls

Applying without going through APS Kamerun (Akademische Prüfstelle, Yaoundé): for Cameroonians the APS certificate is MANDATORY and without it the embassy rejects the file; start it first as it takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Assuming the Cameroonian Baccalauréat gives direct university access: you usually need 1 year of successful university study in Cameroon, otherwise a Studienkolleg followed by the Feststellungsprüfung.
Underfunding the blocked account (Sperrkonto): you need the full yearly amount (~EUR 11,904, i.e. ~EUR 992/month, revised annually) with an approved provider (Fintiba, Expatrio, Coracle); an insufficient balance = visa refusal.

Insider tips

Optimal order of steps: APS -> application via uni-assist/university -> Zulassung (admission) -> Sperrkonto blocked account -> health insurance -> visa appointment; budget 6 to 9 months total.
Use uni-assist (fees ~EUR 75 for the first application, ~EUR 30 per additional one) and request a VPD (Vorprüfungsdokumentation): it speeds up later applications.
The APS certificate is reusable across multiple applications: obtain it once, then apply to several universities with the same document.

Seek qualified employment in Germany with the points-based Opportunity Card (degree, language, age, experience).

The costly pitfalls

Thinking the Chancenkarte gives you a job: it is only a job-SEEKER visa (up to 1 year); you need either a fully recognized qualification or to reach the minimum 6 points.
Not having your Cameroonian diploma assessed via anabin/ZAB: an unlisted or unassessed degree deprives you of the 'recognized qualification' points and can sink you below the threshold.
Neglecting proof of funds: you must show ~EUR 12,324/year (~EUR 1,027/month) via a blocked account OR a part-time contract, otherwise refusal.

Use the official points calculator on make-it-in-germany.de before applying, to confirm you actually reach 6 points.
Stack the criteria: German B1 (2 pts) + 5 years' work experience in 7 (3 pts) + under 35 (2 pts) comfortably exceeds the 6-point threshold.
The card allows 20h/week of paid work PLUS two-week trial employment (Probebeschaftigung) during the job search.

Join a spouse or parent residing in Germany — with the German particularity: proving A1 German BEFORE departure.

Assuming a MINREX legalisation is enough: Germany has SUSPENDED the legalisation of Cameroonian records and has every record verified by cooperation lawyers (XAF 230,000 to 400,000, often 8-12 months, sometimes more) — a 'fixed' record gets caught in the field and sinks the file.
Waiting for the A1 certificate before joining the appointment list: the wait reached 9 months as of July 2025; register FIRST and prepare Start Deutsch 1 while you wait.
Overlooking that reunification with a relative under SUBSIDIARY PROTECTION is suspended until 23 July 2027 (July 2025 law): pay nobody who promises otherwise, only hardship cases (Sections 22-23 AufenthG) remain open.

Optimal order: join the appointment list -> A1 course and exam -> gather the records -> file -> verification; budget 12 to 24 months in total and plan family life accordingly.
The verification fee covers up to 4 persons (XAF 400,000 outside Yaounde/Douala): file the whole family's applications TOGETHER for a single verification and a single bill.
Check the sponsor's exact permit before paying for German classes: spouse of an EU Blue Card holder, skilled worker, researcher or Section 21 self-employed person = A1 waiver; children under 16 = no certificate.

Visit Germany for up to 90 days (tourism, family visit) on a short-stay Schengen visa.

Underestimating the waiting list: over 6 months for a Schengen slot in Yaounde (as of July 2025) while filing is only possible 6 months before travel — a dated wedding or conference needs a year of lead time.
Buying firm plane tickets before the decision: the EUR 90 fee is not refunded on refusal and neither are the tickets — a changeable reservation is all the consulate needs.
Inflating the bank account at the last minute: a large recent deposit with no history is the classic red flag; the consulate reads 3 to 6 months of statements, not a balance.

Insider tips

Booking is FREE on the embassy's official system (service2.diplo.de) and filing happens at the embassy itself (no VFS for Germany in Cameroon): steer clear of touts 'selling' slots in Yaounde or Douala.
Germany is statistically the most favourable Schengen consulate for Cameroonians (about 77% approvals in 2024, versus barely 45% for Italy): if it genuinely is your main destination, it is the right counter.
Your host's Verpflichtungserklärung (EUR 29, valid 6 months, issued in 2 to 8 weeks by their Ausländerbehörde) is the most credible sponsorship if your own funds are tight (~EUR 45/day, about XAF 30,000).

Start a business in Germany: regional economic interest, secured financing and a validated business plan. Demanding but real.

The costly pitfalls

Hunting for an 'official capital threshold': the old bar (EUR 250,000 / 5 jobs) was scrapped in 2012 — what counts is the SOUNDNESS of the financing, and untraceable capital (cash, tontines without statements) convinces neither the IHK nor the embassy.
Submitting a generic business plan translated from a template: the IHK judges LOCAL realism (competition, German pricing, actual customer base); a fanciful forecast leads to a negative opinion that is nearly impossible to reverse.
Ignoring the pension-provision requirement past 45: the prospect of a EUR 1,612.53/month pension for 12 years at age 67 OR assets of EUR 232,204 (amounts since July 2025) — Cameroon is NOT among the exempted nationalities.

Insider tips

Letters of intent from German customers, partners or suppliers are the most concrete proof of 'regional economic interest': mobilise the Cameroonian diaspora, LinkedIn and virtual trade fairs to secure them before filing.
Use the FREE support: the target city's Wirtschaftsförderung and the IHK's start-up advisers gladly review a project — a file that has passed through their hands arrives 'pre-validated' before the Ausländerbehörde.
IT, engineering, language and arts profiles: the freelance track (Section 21(5)) is more flexible — no regional economic interest to prove — but keep translated diplomas, client references and rock-solid proof of livelihood.
